Biography

My name is Jonathan Wang, I am a Chinese American born in Taiwan but grew up in Shanghai, China. I started racing r/c cars back in 2005 when my Dad brought me to a local track in Shanghai. After racing my first race in both nitro and electric on road sedan class, my Dad asked me which class I would like to race more with and I said “Nitro”. In the past 10 years, this hobby has become a big part of my life as I have the dream of becoming a world champion one day.

Nitro is what I started with but electric racing is becoming really fun for me. I am fortunate to have many sponsors help my racing as well as giving me the opportunity to participate in product research and development. I am passionate about r/c racing but I also like the engineering aspect of the sport, this is what makes this hobby so meaningful.

Every year, I fly close to 60,000 miles and spend 30 days away from school to race globally. It is about finding a balance between academics and racing, something I work hard at. Unlike full-time professionals who race for a living, I am a senior now at the Shanghai American School and will be going to college next year in the US, and I hope to study mechanical engineering.

“Never give up” has been my attitude in racing and everything I do. Helping others is also something I always try to do. I want to be able to share my experience with younger kids who want to become a world-class racer.

Outside racing, I love sports, baseball in particular. I have played on the varsity baseball team at my school, and I am also team manager to the girl’s varsity softball team. I also like to listen to music and go to concerts. So this is just a little bit about me.
